BRUSSELS, Jan 19 (Hina) - NATO is ready to support the Hague war crimes tribunal in the implementation of its mission and believes that the integration of Balkan countries into the EU and NATO is vital for the stability of the region, a NATO spokesman said in Brussels on Thursday after talks between NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and the tribunal's chief prosecutor, Carla del Ponte.

The NATO Secretary-General reiterated that NATO was ready to support the tribunal and expressed confidence that the stability of the Balkans depended on the integration of the Balkan countries with the EU and NATO, spokesman James Apparthurai said.

During the half an hour meeting, Scheffer and del Ponte discussed technical cooperation, Apparthurai said.

They once again welcomed the arrest of Ante Gotovina, which clearly proves that Croatia is fully cooperating with the tribunal, he added.

Del Ponte arrived in Brussels today to discuss with Scheffer the gathering of information on the remaining six fugitives from the tribunal and NATO's readiness to take action based on information provided by the tribunal's prosecution.

Del Ponte is also scheduled to meet the EU's High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, and Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, whom she will inform about Serbia's cooperation with the tribunal.
