OSIJEK, Jan 14 (Hina) - The mayor of the eastern city of Osijek, Anto Djapic, has said he is ready to repeat his position on what he called a political and media campaign regarding the war-time events in Osijek and let relevant bodies do their job.

Dajpic said this Saturday, commenting on a request by the Chief State Prosecutor's Office for the police to confiscate recordings in possession of TV Slavonia and Baranja which reportedly show Djapic name witnesses in war crimes trials.

"If I am stripped of immunity as a member of parliament, the parliament will have to open a debate on all events and speak openly about what is behind the political and media campaign regarding events in Osijek in 1991 and 1992."

Djapic added that he had not violated the law, but that his intention was "to help the judiciary".

The State Prosecutor's Office said on its web site on Friday that Television Slavonia and Baranja had refused to give the police a recording of a news conference held on 25 November last year.

The police informed the State Prosecutor's Office of its findings.

Osijek County Prosecutor Davor Petricevic said today he could not discuss anyone's guilt until he saw the recording and carry out a thorough investigation, after which his office would issue a statement.

The Osijek County Court Investigating Centre was requested on Wednesday to appoint a judge to investigate the case.

The recording in question reportedly shows Djapic publicly name witnesses in war crimes trials that are being conducted before the Osijek County Court.
