OSIJEK, Jan 17 (Hina) - The mayor of the eastern city of Osijek, Anto Djapic, has accused human rights organisations of leading a concerted media and political campaign against individuals and violating their human rights.

Djapic, who is also the leader of the third strongest Croatian Party of Rights (HSP), made the accusations in a prime-time current affairs programme on the local Televizija Slavonije i Baranje (TSB) television network on Monday evening.

"They did not defend the human rights of Branimir Glavas, who has been persecuted by the media for months, and they also threatened my human rights, because as a politician and mayor I have the right to state my opinion," Djapic said.

The programme showed its report of 25 November 2005 on a press conference where Djapic read the names of witnesses of crimes committed against Serb civilians in Osijek in 1991. The TSB announced it would submit the report to an investigating judge on Wednesday to see if Djapic's move was a criminal offence.

Several non-governmental organisations sharply protested at the disclosure of the witnesses' names at the time.

"I will never let an equation be drawn between the victim and the aggressor and allow thousands of civilians killed in Osijek to be forgotten and all the horrors of war to be reduced to an investigation into the fates of some 30 Serbs who were killed or went missing, although I say once again that every crime should be punished," Djapic said.

Glavas is the chairman of the Osijek City Council and a member of the Croatian Parliament. Last year he was expelled from the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party of Prime Minister Ivo Sanader and founded his own party, which is in a coalition with the HSP in the city and county of Osijek.
