SISAK, Dec 31 (Hina) - The Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) will
initiate procedure in Parliament to amend electoral legislation in order to
prevent cases of electoral winners being removed from power without new
elections taking place, HSS leader Josip Friscic said at a press conference on
Saturday. Friscic was commenting on Friday's dramatic handover of
power in Sisak, about 60 kilometres southeast of Zagreb, from the former Mayor
Davorko Vidovic of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the new Mayor, Dinko
Pintaric of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).
Vidovic lost the necessary support after two SDP councillors left the
party, became independent councillors and joined the HDZ-led opposition in the
local legislature.
