ZAGREB, Jan 11 (Hina) - The Croatian People's Party (HNS) has condemned Tuesday's statement by Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor that she would demand resignations from all police officers involved in a raid on the Zagreb offices of the Disabled War Veterans Association (HVIDRA), saying that the police had acted on the basis of a court order.

The party's Committee for War Veterans, Home Policy and National Security issued a statement on Wednesday, saying that Monday's police intervention showed that "it is not clear to everyone how the rule of law is built."

"It is tragic and highly irresponsible when a deputy prime minister does not understand it," the statement said, noting that every democratic country was founded on the rule of law and the principle of equality before law.

The HNS accused Kosor of trying to curry favour with the war veterans and win back their sympathies, "forgetting that most of the veterans stood in the country's defence expecting the rule of law and equality before law to be established."

"There are many other ways in which the accumulated problems of the war veterans can be dealt with. Many of them, unfortunately, cannot be resolved with just one statement, especially not if it is against the rule of law," the statement said.

The party said that Croatia's progress in democratic development was crucial for its admission to the European Union.
