ZAGREB, Jan 10 (Hina) - The head of the Islamic community in Croatia, Mufti Sevko Omerbasic, held a service in the Zagreb mosque on Tuesday morning celebrating the start of the four-day holiday of Eid al-Adha.

Extending best wishes on the occasion of this major religious holiday, which is known in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina as Kurban Bairam, Omerbasic commented on his community's activities in 2005 and plans for 2006.

At the start of the morning prayer Omerbasic said he was happy that the faithful in Croatia were celebrating Kurban Bairam in peace, and recalled that in 2005 the Islamic community and Croatian authorities had signed an agreement on spiritual guidance for Islamic believers serving in the Croatian army.

He announced the construction of a mosque in the eastern Croatian city of Osijek and a more active role of Muslims in the coastal towns of Porec and Umag and other towns this year.

Omerbasic also announced plans for the opening of the first museum of the Islamic community in Croatia, which will display artefacts showing connections between Islam and Zagreb through the past.

Commenting on some important anniversaries which the Islamic community in Croatia would mark this year, he mentioned that the community would also celebrate the 90th anniversary of the decision under which the Croatian state parliament formally recognised Islam. After Croatia, Austria was the second European country to do the same.

In this context, Omerbasic spoke about far-reaching consequences of that decision.

He also thanked the Croatian national broadcasting corporation HRT for broadcasting Ramadan Bairam and Kurban Bairam services live for 15 consecutive years.

The head of the Islamic community in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Mustafa Ceric, held a Kurban Bairam service in Gazi Husrev-Begova mosque in Sarajevo on Tuesday morning, saying that human beings should be judged only according to what was good and bad in them.

Commenting on the current situation in the world, Ceric said: "What kind of humanism is it when innocent people are killed every day in the world, notably in Iraq? In the name of what kind of freedom can people be kept in detention without a fair trial?"

Commenting on the situation in Bosnia, he wondered "whether democracy has any sense if the right of a majority is not respected when that majority would like that the country has one host who can be a good representative for everybody".

He alluded to the ongoing negotiations on the scope of activities and powers of Bosnia's future president or presidency.
