Slovene minister says good relations with Croatia of mutual interest

LJUBLJANA, Jan 4 (Hina) - Good relations with Croatia are of mutualinterest but in Croatia outstanding issues are unnecessarilypoliticised, Slovene Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel said onWednesday.
LJUBLJANA, Jan 4 (Hina) - Good relations with Croatia are of mutual interest but in Croatia outstanding issues are unnecessarily politicised, Slovene Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel said on Wednesday.

He touched upon Croatian-Slovene relations in an address to diplomats convened for regular annual consultations.

"In Croatia they should realise that a negative policy towards Slovenia affects public opinion in Slovenia," he said, adding Slovenia would continue to support Croatia's Euro-Atlantic integration.

"With Croatia we have to agree on common principles and then honour them. We must cooperate, but one country's benefit must not be to the other's detriment."

Rupel said Ljubljana expected Zagreb to act in accordance with standards valid in the European Union and NATO instead of politicising the outstanding border and Ljubljanska Banka debt issues. He added that Croatia proposed arbitration for the border although it had refused arbitration for the Slovene bank's debt to Croatian depositors.

Rupel also accused the Croatian public of forging geographical names and using the term Savudrija Bay instead of Piran Bay, referring to the northern Adriatic area.

He urged diplomats to communicate more with the public in the states they are accredited to, saying this was their principal task and not giving statements for the Slovene media.
