Police investigating 99 people suspected of involvement in Srebrenica crimes

SARAJEVO, July 10 (Hina) - Ninety-nine people, including 35 employees of the Bosnian Serb ministry of the interior, are under investigation because they are suspected of involvement in war crimes in Srebrenica or of helping war criminals hide, Bosnia's Chief State Prosecutor Marinko Jurcevic and High Representative Miroslav Lajcak said in Sarajevo on Tuesday.

Speaking at a news conference held together with the head of the Crime Police Department of the Republika Srpska Interior Ministry, Gojko Vasic, the two officials said that measures were being taken to prevent the suspects from fleeing the country in the course of the investigation.

"At the moment, the police are seizing travel documents and IDs belonging to 93 suspects," said Lajcak, who only a week after taking up office as the new High Representative used his extensive powers and imposed amendments to five laws giving judicial bodies new possibilities of control over persons charged with grave crimes as well as the power to prevent them from fleeing the country.

Lajcak said that he had also decided to replace Dragomir Andan, deputy police director of the Serb entity, suspected of helping war crimes indictees hide.

All employees of the Serb entity's interior ministry who are being investigated by the Bosnian State Prosecution have been suspended until the end of the investigation. Lajcak said that some of them were also suspected of committing perjury in war crimes trials.

The measures taken today are aimed at facilitating the prosecution of war crimes suspects, Lajcak said, adding that ensuring full cooperation with the Hague war crimes tribunal would be one of his priorities.

Chief State Prosecutor Marinko Jurcevic said that the list of persons suspected of involvement in the Srebrenica crimes contained as many as 810 names and that the prosecution would not stop at the measures taken so far.

"This is only the beginning," he added.

Serb entity crime police chief Vasic said that the identity of persons who were under investigation and whose documents were being confiscated could not be revealed yet, but he did confirm that all suspects were citizens of the Serb entity.

The Bosnian border police have been instructed to look out for persons on the state prosecution's list and prevent them from trying to cross the border using travel documents of some other country.
