"Is somebody in Austria interested in protecting Austrian bankers who helped plunder Croatia?", Mesic was quoted by Croatian Television as saying during a visit to Kazakhstan on Friday.
The president noted that "obviously, many want to see Zagorec not handed over to Croatia". "You can see the commotion in some circles, perhaps also in Austria," he added.
The president said he was dissatisfied with the cooperation of Austrian state institutions with Croatia and the alleged involvement of the Austrian secret service.
"If somebody illegally monitors somebody else and claims that it was done by somebody else's intelligence services, it is reason enough to ask who is actually being protected and what kind of cooperation we have with Austrian institutions. Are they protecting somebody Croatia is after or Croatia's interests?".
