Both ministers described the cooperation as very good and intensive, with Platter saying that his country wanted to accompany Croatia on the road to the European Union, where the issue of security was very important.
The joint news conference was also attended by two Austrian police officers, who are to help their Croatian colleagues and Austrian tourists in resorts on the Croatian Adriatic coast as of July 1.
Platter said that his country wanted to expand international police cooperation onto the entire Southeast Europe and would therefore organise a conference of ministers of the interior in 2008, to focus on the prevention of organised crime and people and drug smuggling along the so-called Balkan route.
He commended the development of Croatia's DNA base which was part of the Interpol system, and which he said had helped solve a number of crimes in Croatia, Austria and Germany.
The two ministers agreed on cooperation during the 2008 European football championships, to be held in Austria and Switzerland.
They said that they did not discuss the case of Croatian Army general Vladimir Zagorec, whose extradition Croatia has requested from Austria.
Kirin said that the countries' police forces were successfully cooperating on that case, as well as in shedding light on financial wrongdoing in the Brodosplit shipbuilding company.
