Mesic said he still expected the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) to submit its programme, adding that the programme submitted by the Social Democratic Party's (SDP) candidate for the prime minister, Ljubo Jurcic, could be implemented.
Commenting on his relations with Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, Mesic said he agreed with the PM when it came to Croatia's integration into the European Union, but that they had different positions on the economic success and development.
"I don't think that we made spectacular results in the economy, because production was not sufficiently activated," Mesic said.
The president declined to say which party would win more votes at the autumn elections, but stressed that in his opinion none of the parties would be able to convene the government without forming a coalition with another smaller party.
Commenting on Operation Maestro which saw six Croatian Privatisation Fund officials arrested for taking over 800,000 euros in bribes, Mesic said he wanted to see "the conductor of the orchestra" be brought to justice. However, it is irresponsible to speak about names before the completion of the investigation. "This person can also be someone outside of the system and not necessarily a senior state official," the president said.
Asked if he would request that three ministers from Sanader's government sitting in the Privatisation Fund Steering Committee be held politically responsible, he said he would request that responsible people be held accountable, but that only institutions of the rule of law could establish who these people were.
Mesic also commented on his recent talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and a recent energy summit in Zagreb. Mesic said that Croatia needed energy and that the implementation of the Druzba Adria project would solve the issue of oil and gas supply.
However, there is plenty of time to think about the entire project, because nobody is forcing Croatia to make a rash decision, Mesic said
