WARSAW, June 5 (Hina) - Poland will oppose attempts to use
Croatia's contentious issues with Italy and Slovenia to block Croatia in
accession negotiations with the European Union, Croatian Parliament Speaker
Vladimir Seks said in Warsaw on Tuesday after talks with Pawel Zalewski, chair
of the Polish parliament's foreign affairs committee. Poland's
diplomacy will insist that the solution to those issues be the result of
bilateral negotiations between those states, said Seks.
The press asked if it was good or perhaps bad for Croatia to have
Poland on its side, given that Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his brother,
Prime Minister Jaroslaw, had proven to be tough negotiating partners in
Brussels.
Seks said that "Polish support is a big plus because the tough and
persistent Polish positions, in many ways similar to Croatia's wishes regarding
the decision-making system in the EU, give Croatia hope that by defending its
own positions Poland will also defend Croatia's".
