ZAGREB, June 15 (Hina) - Social Democratic Party economist Ljubo Jurcic, whom the strongest Croatian opposition party plans to nominate for the next prime minister, has met US officials, economic reformers and heads of independent institutes and universities during his recent visit to the United States, the Adriatic Institute, a Croatian independent think tank, said in a press release on Friday.

Jurcic said he had met people who had implemented successful economic reforms round the world to discuss ideas and strategies aimed at creating new jobs in Croatia, combating corruption and improving the Croatian economy.

"The US is an important partner to Croatia and played a key role in securing peace and stability in the region and supporting the economic vitality of Croatia. Today Croatia is facing intense regional competition for jobs and investment and its policy should focus on creating conditions for economic growth and improving the standard of living for Croatian citizens," Jurcic said.

Adriatic Institute president and co-founder Natasa Srdoc said that "Jurcic's focus on the rule of law, combating corruption and implementing market reform is a positive signal to US business people, media, think tanks and government officials."

"The meetings the Adriatic Institute arranged with selected White House and State Department officials concentrated on the lack of rule of law, growing corruption and the economic situation in Croatia. Croatia is at a crossroads and low economic growth rates hurt Croatian citizens.

"Croatian citizens, taxpayers and employees expect a better future and want to see positive changes that will be brought by economic growth," Srdoc said, expressing her satisfaction with the meetings.
