In her presentation, Dalic focused on the tax system and finances, and reforms that need to be implemented in those areas. Among special problems faced by the government, she cited a high foreign debt, increased government spending, low exports and increased imports, unemployment and public administration.
Dalic said that the government's macroeconomic policy was directed at achieving fiscal stability as an important economic instrument to reduce the external debt and government spending.
She said that high government expenditure, coupled by a slow and inefficient administration and a high deficit, was posing a special problem.
The economic growth rate is good, but the exports growth rate is too slow, which leads to an increasing foreign debt, unemployment and a high share of government expenditure in gross domestic product, Dalic said.
Stressing the importance of the private sector in the development of the national economy, Dalic said that the ongoing reform of public administration was aimed at reducing the number of laws relevant for that sector because they were an obstacle to its development.
The American Chamber of Commerce in Croatia is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation whose purpose is to promote cooperation and friendship between the United States and Croatia through trade, investment and economic development. It has about 200 members in Croatia.
