I believe that in 2009 Croatian university students and teachers will be able to use the benefits offered by ERASMUS, Figel said after meeting Croatian Science, Education and Sport Minister Dragan Primorac in Brussels.
The programme, introduced in 1987, makes it possible for students to study abroad between three and 12 months. Its success makes it a leading programme promoting mobility in Europe.
Asked what he thought about Croatia's intention to make secondary education compulsory, Figel said that education fell within the authority of member states and that there existed a mosaic of education systems within the EU.
The more opportunities for learning and studying the better for the country, its economy, its society and its future, he stressed.
