PRISTINA, June 12 (Hina) - Kosovo has been de facto independent for eight years now and very soon it will be de iure independent, Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu said on the occasion of the eighth anniversary of the arrival of international peacekeeping forces in the province, which is marked on June 12, Freedom Day.

"On Freedom Day we reaffirm our commitment to joining, as an independent state, Euro-Atlantic structures with which we share the basic values of freedom and human dignity," Sejdiu said in a message to Kosovo citizens.

He underlined the importance of the statement of US President George W. Bush that Kosovo would be independent.

After almost a three-month NATO bombing campaign against Serbia in 1999, a military-technical agreement was signed in Kumanovo providing for the withdrawal of all Serbian military and police forces from Kosovo.

The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1244 placing the southern Serbian province under UN administration. International peacekeeping forces arrived in Kosovo on June 12 and that day is observed in Kosovo as Freedom Day.
