the conservation and restoration project "Croatian Apoxyomenos" has been
awarded to Croatian restorers representing the project which has won the
Europen Union's second prize for cultural heritage in the category of art
conservation and restoration, the Croatian Culture Ministry said in a

The project competed with 158 other projects from 32 countries.
The bronze statue of a Greek athlete was discovered in 1999 in the sea
off the coast of the northern Croatian Adriatic island of Losinj. The statue
dates back to the 4th century B.C. and leading international experts have
agreed that it was made by an outstanding follower of the school of the great
Greek sculptor Lysippos.
The sculpture was restored by Croatian and Italian experts. Restoration
works started in 2000 and were completed in May 2006.
