ZAGREB, May 29 (Hina) - Croatian Justice Minister Ana Lovrin has said that the fight against corruption is already in full swing with the Croatian Government having demonstrated political will to curb this problem.
ZAGREB, May 29 (Hina) - Croatian Justice Minister Ana Lovrin has said that the fight against corruption is already in full swing with the Croatian Government having demonstrated political will to curb this problem.

Minister Lovrin told a news conference in Zagreb on Tuesday that the government's determination to counter corruption, bribery and crime was proved by the fact that it had adopted a national anti-corruption programme and a series of action plans to carry out the programme.

Lovrin said that the number of corruption and bribery verdicts had climbed by 120 percent from 2005 and that 151 verdicts convicted the indictees.

Asked to comment on the anti-corruption platform launched yesterday by the opposition Social Democratic Party, she said that she agreed with this programme as the Croatian Government had already formulated it and was carrying out from its programme.

"Why should one trust more promises than deeds," the minister and a senior official of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union said.

She said that harsher sentences had been introduced for white collar crimes during the term of the incumbent government and that Ivo Sanader cabinet insisted on transparency in the judiciary.

She added that a series of measures were also adopted in public health, local self-government, politcal parties' work, education etc.
