Ceku says Serbs in Kosovo have no reason for concern

PRISTINA, May 7 (Hina) - Serbs in Kosovo have no reason for concern and a final solution to the Kosovo status is not a signal for leaving Kosovo, but for a clearly defined future and the return of those who left, Kosovo Prime Minister Agim Ceku said on Monday at a debate in the Serb enclave of Caglavica, outside Pristina.

"The resolution of the final status also resolves all dilemmas that you have today. The return will be possible, very soon. People will know where they stand, where they are returning to, what Kosovo is and what it offers and guarantees. They will know what Maarti Ahtisaari offers in his package, what the international community guarantees and what Kosovo's government and institutions guarantee," Ceku said, addressing a group of Serbs from Pristina and the area.

The PM said that the Serbs' fear of violence escalating after the final status is defined was not justified, stressing that as soon as the issue of Kosovo's status is resolved the Kosovo government would turn to economic issues, investments, education, health, sports and culture issues.

"I agree that Kosovo Serbs are in many ways in the most difficult position today," he said. "I know that you are truly worried, that you are not clear about many things, that you receive different messages, that you are worried about the future and your survival in Kosovo and about what would Kosovo's status bring, especially if Kosovo gains independence," Ceku said, adding that the priority of his government was to help the Serb community.

He stressed that the Serbs did not need to fear for their future in independent Kosovo.

"Nothing bad is going to happen to the Kosovo Serbs once Kosovo gains independence. Today, the Kosovo Serbs do not know which country they live in, who is governing them, who their prime minister is, who are the ministers they will receive their wages from, which licence plates to put on their cars, which ID card to carry," Ceku said, stressing that these misunderstandings would be cleared with the resolution of Kosovo's status.
