ZAGREB, April 11 (Hina) - The Jasenovac Memorial Park will receive the Carlo Scarpa international award for landscape architecture which the Benetton Studi e Ricerche foundation presents annually for the nurturing of cultural heritage and landscape, the Italian news agency ANSA said on Wednesday.

The Jasenovac Memorial Park, which has a 24 metre high stone flower erected in memory of those killed at the Jasenovac death camp during WWII, will receive the award, established 18 years ago, in Treviso, Italy on May 12.

The Jasenovac Memorial Park, about 100 km southeast of Zagreb, was designed by Bogdan Bogdanovic and built in the early 1960s.

"The park's display overturns the typical path of crystallisation of memory and commits it to the process of original invention," the foundation's president, Domenico Luciani, said presenting the 2007 award in Milan today.

The memorial park covers the area of the 1941-45 concentration camp and does not contain tombstones. Bogdanovic opted for reshaping the land, using the river Sava so that its backwaters within the park could be directed to the central stone flower monument, which the architect said neither threatened nor incited revenge nor hid the truth, said ANSA.
