ZAGREB, April 4 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic received Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev on Wednesday for talks on relations between the two countries, cooperation in the region, and Euro-Atlantic integration processes, the President's Office said in a statement.

Mesic and Stanishev agreed that there were no outstanding issues between Croatia and Bulgaria, but that it was necessary to encourage companies in both countries to intensify cooperation.

"Croatia and Bulgaria have a common interest and that's peace and stability in the region," Mesic said, while Stanishev also highlighted the importance of European membership prospects and regional cooperation for the stability of the region.

The two officials said that in the search for a lasting and stable solution to the Kosovo status issue it was of vital importance to guarantee equal standards for all and to ensure compliance with those standards.

Speaking of Croatia's progress towards membership of the European Union and NATO, Mesic said that Croatia was implementing reforms and adopting the necessary standards at a good pace.

Stanishev said that Bulgaria would continue supporting Croatia on its path to the EU and NATO and that it was ready to offer Croatia its experience and experts.

Earlier in the day, the Bulgarian prime minister met Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks, with both officials expressing satisfaction with the state of bilateral relations.

According to a statement from the Croatian Parliament, Seks said that Croatia and Bulgaria had intense parliamentary cooperation both at the level of parliament speakers and at the level of parliamentary committees.

Seks said he was pleased that he would have a chance to again meet the Chairman of the Bulgarian National Assembly, Georgi Pirinski, at a conference of parliament speakers from member states of the Southeast Europe Cooperation Process (SEECP), which is scheduled to take place in Zagreb from April 15 to 17 under the Croatian presidency.

Seks said that the SEECP provided a good framework for developing cooperation with countries in the region.

Bulgaria is the next president of the SEECP.

Stanishev said that Croatia and Bulgaria had considerable responsibility for ensuring stability in the region and that any renewed destabilisation of Southeast Europe would do great damage to the entire region.

Stanishev reiterated that Croatia could always count on Bulgaria's friendly assistance on its path to EU and NATO membership.
