PLITVICE, April 2 (Hina) - Representatives of the head of state, the parliament and the government, the ministries of internal affairs, defence and war veterans, and Homeland War associations and local communities on Monday gathered at Plitvice to commemorate the 16th anniversary of the police operation Plitvice 91 which claimed the life of the first Croatian police officer in Croatia's war of independence.

Jovic's family and the delegations present at the commemoration laid wreaths at a monument erected in a forest in Plitvice in Jovic's honour.

Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said that Jovic's sacrifice was a symbol of all Croatian soldiers killed or gone missing in the war and of the beginning of the aggression on Croatia and the suffering of the Croatian people.

The Homeland War was a just, defence and liberation war, and we had the right to launch the Flash and Storm operations to liberate our territory, Kosor said.

After the wreath-laying ceremony, Mass was said for Jovic and all Croatian soldiers killed in the war.

Jovic was killed at Easter, 31 March 1991, in an operation against Serb rebels who blocked a road at Plitvice with logs and ambushed Croatian police who had come to help their colleagues surrounded in the local police station.
