WASHINGTON/NEW YORK , March 30 (Hina) - The signing of a convention on the rights of persons with disabilities started in the United Nations in New York on Friday in the presence of officials from more than 70 countries.

Croatia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Family Affairs, War Veterans and Inter-generational Solidarity, Jadranka Kosor, signed the convention on behalf of the Croatian government.

The text of the convention was adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2006, after three-year negotiations which included Croatia and Croatian NGOs, notably the national federation of associations of persons with disabilities.

The convention will go into force after it is ratified by 20 UN member-countries.
