The EUR 280 million project provides for the construction or reconstruction of sewage systems and the renovation of the existing waste water purification plants along the Adriatic coast. It is fully adjusted to EU ambient quality standards in local communities.
The Croatian government and the World Bank are involved in the implementation of the three-stage programme through a loan for the improvement of waste water purification in the communities along the Adriatic coast and on the islands.
The World Bank covers 50 per cent of the costs; 23 per cent of the EUR 40 million approved for the first phase of the programme, which lasts until the end of 2008, has been spent so far.
Some 30 more areas with an overall population exceeding 300,000 will join in the programme next year.
