Under the indictment, Xavit Morina commanded the heavily armed group which was active in Macedonia, where tensions between Macedonians and ethnic Albanians in 2001 escalated into a conflict, and which attacked the headquarters of local authorities in the village Mala Recica. Three persons were killed in the attack.
Morina fled to Kosovo, but was arrested in May 2003 by international peacekeeping forces.
Since Macedonia and Kosovo do not have an agreement on extradition, Morina was tried in Pristina by an international three-member panel of judges.
The former UN Civil Administrator in Kosovo, Michael Steiner, declared ANA illegal and banned it.
