The event, held under PM Ceku's auspices, was held on the occasion of the ninth anniversary of the death of Adem Jashari, the legendary commander of the former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and national hero.
Ceku said that he would personally see to it that the Kosovo Protection Corps was transformed into Kosovo's new army.
The commander of the Kosovo Protection Corps, General Sulejman Selimi, and Hashim Thaci, president of the leading Opposition party, the Democratic Party of Kosovo, and the KLA's political director during the conflict in the province, said that Kosovo's new army would be recruited from the Kosovo Protection Corps.
The draft plan for Kosovo by UN special envoy Martti Ahtisaari envisages the disbanding of the Kosovo Protection Corps and the establishment of NATO-controlled Kosovo security forces.
