"This is my opinion, because if you cannot be both member of a supervisory board and your own control factor," Mesic said, adding that for example Croatian Radio Television did not have a finance supervision system.
"We have a programmes council, but you would not believe, we don't have (financial) control," the president said. There is only a state audit system, but when the state audit arrives it is already too late, Mesic said.
Mesic told reporters that he just spoke on the phone with Social Democrats president Ivica Racan, adding that the Opposition leader told him he was feeling all right. Mesic said he would respect Racan's wish not to receive visits while being treated in a Munich hospital, adding that they would see each other after Racan returned to Zagreb.
Asked to comment on the case of General Vladimir Zagorec, namely on police claims that Zagorec is unavailable, while his attorney claims otherwise, Mesic said that it would be good for Zagorec to appear before investigating bodies given that is attorney claims that his client is innocent. Asked to comment on the kidnapping of two Croatian citizens in Nigeria, Mesic said no policy could justify the kidnapping of workers who do their job and for which they do not receive that much money. All those who attack these workers that way are criminals, Mesic said.
"The Croatian Foreign Ministry is constantly in the loop and I hope that we will succeed in returning these workers to their positions," Mesic said.
