DUBROVNIK, Feb 23 (Hina) - The fourth annual ministerial conference on border security in Southeast Europe resumed in the southern Adriatic resort of Dubrovnik on Friday, gathering 110 participants, including the interior ministers of Croatia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, and Serbia.

Border police chiefs spoke about last year's progress in border security in their countries and the implementation of a 2007-08 strategy.

Organised crime is using the so-called Balkan route to transport people, arms, drugs, vehicles, high-tariff and other smuggled goods, it was said.

Attempts to launder money include investing in legal activities, which obstructs economic recovery and development, incites corruption, violates the fundamental human

rights, slows down democratic processes, and affects states' internal security and stability.

The Dubrovnik conference is aimed at bringing Southeast European countries closer to the common goal of better transborder cooperation in suppressing organised crime.

In attendance are high representatives and delegations from Austria, Bulgaria, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Spain, Slovenia and Ukraine.

The focus is on general security in European Union and regional countries.
