ZAGREB, Feb 21 (Hina) - The new Food Safety Bill which the Government sent to parliament on Wednesday has been drawn up in accordance with European Union Standards and introduces stronger mechanisms for food safety control, Agriculture Minister Petar Cobankovic said.

"Food safety is ensured according to the 'from field to table' principle," Minister Cobankovic said at a government session today, adding that business entities dealing with food would take over responsibility for food safety.

The bill gives the Croatian Food Agency a new role, too.

The national agency would be expected to assess risks and inform the public about findings of its assessments of food safety risks.

Risk management would fall within the Agriculture Ministry's remit.

The bill tackles the issue of GMO products and creates a framework for the protection of Croatian traditional food products.
