The decision had been announced at the beginning of this year with plans to appoint the highest body of the Islamic community in Belgrade. The decision adopted today also includes a decision to elect the leadership of the Islamic community in the Sandzak as part of the highest body of the Islamic community of Serbia.
The Islamic community of Serbia, based in Belgrade, has no organisational ties with other communities in Serbia or Bosnia-Herzegovina.
In the former Yugoslavia the Islamic leadership in Sarajevo was the highest body of the Islamic community. Following a decision to appoint the Belgrade mufti as head of the Islamic leadership in Serbia, the Islamic community in the Sandzak and the Islamic community in the Presevo Valley, which is part of the Islamic community of Pristina, remained under the authority of the Islamic leadership in Sarajevo.
