ZAGREB, Feb 1 (Hina) - Croatia and Sweden on Thursday signed an agreement on defence cooperation and expressed interest in Croatia's purchasing Sweden's combat aircraft Gripen, as part of the modernisation of Croatia's armed forces.

State secretaries in the two countries' defence ministries Mate Raboteg and Hans Gustaf Wessberg signed in Zagreb a general agreement on cooperation in the defence sector, which defines areas of future cooperation.

"These areas are military technical cooperation, exchange of experience in peace operations, education, training (...) and the agreement also foresees the way of protecting and exchanging information to the interest of both countries," Croatia's Raboteg said.

He confirmed that the meeting also focused on Croatia's plan to purchase a combat airplane, in accordance with Croatia's intention to have "its own air policy".

Swedish state secretary Wessberg stressed his country wanted to develop partnership with all countries that take seriously their national defence and international obligations.

Raboteg said that Croatia and Sweden had already launched a programme of modernisation of "certain capacities" in the Croatian Navy.
