SARAJEVO, Jan 25 (Hina) - The Office of the High Representative and the OSCE Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina have called on Miklss Haraszti, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, to visit the country and provide an assessment of the situation, a statement issued in Sarajevo said on Thursday.

The OHR and the OSCE Mission said in the joint statement that a series of events in recent days had generated concern for the position of public media.

The statement recalled the Republika Srpska Government's decision to boycott the state-level public broadcaster, BHT1, and that the Office of the Republika Srpska President subsequently refused to even grant BHT1 access to press conferences.

The OHR and the OSCE underlined that the ambassadors of the Steering Board of the Peace Implementation Council had "also expressed their concern and support" for Haraszti's visit.

Deputy High Representative Peter Baas-Backer visited Banja Luka today for talks with Bosnian Serb authorities, saying he was appalled by the authorities' treatment of the state TV.

The Milorad Dodik cabinet decided earlier this month that its officials would not contact BHT1 reporters due to their dissatisfaction with the broadcaster's editorial policy.

Immediately after that, the Steering Board of the state-level Public Broadcasting Service, which is chaired by Bosnian Serb Nikola Deretic, replaced general director Drago Maric and instructed the new director, Mehmed Agovic, to replace as soon as possible BHT director Milan Trivic and news programme editor Amir Zukic.

Journalists' associations vehemently condemned such actions, saying they represented direct political pressure on public television.
