Bjelis and his guests talked about the history of the University of Zagreb, which was founded in 1669 and is one of the oldest in this part of Europe.
He said the University of Zagreb was cooperating with the leading universities in the country and abroad, notably in Austria, Germany, France, nordic countries and countries in transition.
Bjelis also mentioned cooperation with universities in the United States, Canada and Australia, notably those employing scholars of Croatian descent.
He said the student exchange was 500-600 a year, which he added was the European standard.
In attendance were some 50 ambassadors and embassy representatives, with Apostolic Nuncio Francisco Javier Lozano at the helm.
