Receiving credentials from the Montenegrin ambassador, President Mesic said that Croatia and Montenegro shared the same strategic goal - membership of the European Union - and that this was the reason why they should settle outstanding issues, including the issue of borders.
"As for (Croatia's southernmost peninsula of) Prevlaka, we have a temporary solution that is proving to be satisfactory for both sides," Mesic said.
He explained that the two countries have created conditions to build relations that would be free of the burden of the past and historical prejudices and stereotypes, but that our historical experience should not be forgotten, but learned from.
Ambassador Lukovac expressed regret over the war against Croatia into which he said Montenegro had been pushed, and voiced confidence that relations between the two countries would continue to develop towards full normalisation and good neighbourliness.
