HDZ comments on SDP's accusations

SPLIT, Jan 9 (Hina) - Leaders of Split's city and county branches of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) on Tuesday harshly protested against yesterday's statements by the head of the Split branch of Croatia's strongest opposition party, the Social Democrats (SDP), Marin Jurjevic.

Jurjevic, who is also a member of Parliament, said on Monday that the proposal by Prime Minister and HDZ leader Ivo Sanader that the Split city authorities should raise a monument in the city centre in honour of the first Croatian president, Franjo Tudjman, was "an unacceptable attempt at scoring cheap political points".

The head of the Split branch of the HDZ, mayor Zvonimir Puljic, said Jurjevic was still traumatised by the fact that the HDZ was founded in Split in 1990, adding that the SDP official did not miss out on a single opportunity to criticise the anniversary of the party

"As the successor of the late president of the strongest political party and resident of Split, Ivo Sanader has the right to propose the raising of a monument to Franjo TUdjman and the HDZ will officially submit the proposal to the City Council," Pujlic said, adding that experts would decide the location where the monument would be erected.
