The incident occurred on January 7, 1992 when a Yugoslav Air Force MiG-21 fired a missile at one of two unarmed ECMM helicopters flying back to Zagreb from Hungary.
Four Italians (Colonel Enzo Venturini and Lieutenants Marco Matta, Silvano Natale and Fiorenzo Ramacci) and one Frenchman (Lieutenant 1st Class Jean-Loupe Eychenne) were killed. The other helicopter landed on the crash site, but its crew could not help their colleagues.
Delegations of the Croatian government, Varazdin County, the Italian and French embassies, and the families of those killed laid wreaths and lit candles at the memorial site in Podrute.
