BELGRADE, March 31 (Hina) - The witness Katica Palijan on Tuesday testified before the Belgrade District Court about crimes committed by the first defendant Ljuban Devetak during the Serb occupation of her village of Lovas in eastern Croatia in 1991 and 1992.

The witness's husband was one of the 20 victims killed on 18 October 1991 when Serb paramilitaries forced a few dozen villagers to walk into a minefield. Another 12 villagers were wounded.

Palijan said that after she arrived in the centre of the village to ask about her husband who had been taken with other victims into a building of the local co-operative a day before their death, the defendant Devetak said to her: "Go home if you don't want to end up like him."

She cited Devetak as having said that "everyone should be murdered, particularly those who have male children."

The witness said that local Croats had to wear white armbands and were used as forced labour.

Palijan said her children and she were among the 89 people who were deported from the village by bus on 6 April 1992.

Another witness, Nikola Vukovic, who used to be a Serb paramilitary at the time relevant for the indictment, told the court on Monday that as the village commander Devetak had the final say in everything and that his closest associates were the second defendant Milan Devcic and the third defendant Milan Radojcic.

The next hearing was set for 23 April.
