Slovenia has betrayed European values, says Sanader

ZAGREB, March 23 (Hina) - Using its power to veto Croatia's European Union accession negotiations over the two countries' border dispute, Slovenia has betrayed European values, Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said in an interview with the Financial Times Deutschland (FTD) on Monday.

"In the basic values of the European Union there is no room for pressure," the Croatian premier said commenting on Slovenia's insistence that Croatia could not resume the EU membership talks before the two countries solved their border row.

The FTD recalls that Slovenia blocked Croatia's EU entry talks in late 2008 due to the two countries' failure to demarcate the border line in the Bay of Savudrija.

The friendship between Croatia and Slovenia is "endangered", Sanader said.

Slovenia entered the EU with the unresolved border issue, and it cannot now be the one to bloc our entry into te EU due to the same issue, Sanader said.

The FTD recalls that Croatia would like to finish the accession negotiations by the end of this year and become an EU member in 2011.

Sanader also underlines that Slovenia raised the border issue at the end of Croatia's accession negotiations.

"We have been negotiating (our accession to the EU) for four years, and suddenly Slovenia is raising this issue now," the Croatian official said.

According to the magazine, some European politicians have shown understanding for Sanader's anger.
