BELGRADE, April 24 (Hina) - Addressing a regional ministerial social policy conference which started in Belgrade on Friday, the last prime minister of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY), Ante Markovic, called for the strengthening of regional cooperation.

He said that during the ongoing economic crisis, countries in the neighbourhood of Serbia should intensify their cooperation and in this context he advocated the introduction of a sort of customs union in the region.

It is clear that in the world huge monopolies have been formed, notably in the financial sector, which cannot be controlled by the capitalist system. Therefore solutions should be sought from the bottom to the top and not vice versa, Markovic said pushing for the merging of financial and economic potentials in the region.

He said that the problem of current leaders of the countries set up in the area of the former SFRY was their lack of knowledge.

The two-day conference is focusing on measures to alleviate the impact of the economic crisis and protect the most vulnerable categories of people.

The head of the Croatian Employment Office, Ankica Paun Jarallah, and the leader of the SSSH trade union, Ana Knezevic, will speak about Croatia's experiences.
