Some 500 protesting students march in Zagreb

ZAGREB, May 16 (Hina) - Some 500 students of Zagreb's Faculty of the Humanities and Social Sciences who have been holding sit-in actions on the premises of the faculty for five weeks, on Saturday marched from the faculty to Zagreb's main square demanding free of charge tertiary education.

During the march they carried banners with slogans "Knowledge is not a Consumer Good", "We don't give up!" and similar messages.

In the square protesters gave balloons with their messages, and in their speeches strongly criticised the relevant authorities for what they said turning a deaf ear to their demands.

Two leaders of trade unions in the public sector, who earlier this week reached an agreement with the government on costs of labour, today came in the Jelacic square to express solidarity with protesting students.

Students of Zagreb's Faculty of the Humanities and Social Sciences launched their protest in early April. After that their colleagues from Zadar, Split, Osijek and some other cities joined in the action. In the meantime many of them discontinued the protests, with undergraduates from the Zagreb faculty persisting in sit-ins.

Earlier this month, Croatian Science and Education Minister Dragan Primorac said that in the 2010/2011 school year Croatia would have legislation providing for free higher education for students awarded with a sufficient number of ECTS credits for studying successfully according to the Bologna process.

Primorac said that success would be the main criterion and that all excellent students, regardless of their financial status, would be given the opportunity to study free of charge.

The Science, Education and Sports Ministry is expected to appoint a commission comprising representatives of the academic community, notably teachers and students, who will define a system of financing studies and student tuition fees based on which students will be encouraged to excel in their studies.
