Big differences in household expenses in 10 east and central European states - survey

ZAGREB, May 16 (Hina) - Huge differences have been evident in consumer spending of private households in 10 central and eastern European countries covered by a study conducted recently by the Austrian Regioplan consulting agency.
ZAGREB, May 16 (Hina) - Huge differences have been evident in consumer spending of private households in 10 central and eastern European countries covered by a study conducted recently by the Austrian Regioplan consulting agency.

According to the findings of the study, which were published last Tuesday, the lowest household expenditure was in Ukraine and Bulgaria, while Slovenia topped the list. For instance, a Ukrainian household spends on average EUR 214 per month, while the monthly expenditure of a Slovenian household is EUR 1,700.

Croatian households spend monthly between EUR 900 and 1,000, just like Czechs, Slovaks, Poles and Hungarians, while the monthly household expenditure in Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia ranges between EUR 400 and 500.

Three major groups of expenditure are food and drink, housing and utilities, and transport.

Food in Ukraine makes up 54 percent of household expenses, and 40 percent in Bulgaria and Romania. In Serbia, 36 percent of expenses goes on food, while in Croatia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland food accounts for one quarter of total monthly household spending.

According to the survey, a Croatian household spends annually some EUR 470 on tobacco products and alcoholic drinks and EUR 105 on education.

Vacation and leisure spending makes up 11 percent of total expenses in Slovenia and the Czech Republic, seven percent in Slovakia and Poland, while in Croatia these expenses make up five percent of total expenditure.
