ZAGREB, May 17 (Hina) - The preliminary and incomplete results of
local elections held in Croatia on Sunday show that candidates of the Croatian
Democratic Union (HDZ) and its coalition partners took the lead in elections
for the prefects of 13 counties, while Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidates
are likely to win four county prefect seats. In three counties,
there is a tight race between candidates of the two parties.
In Istria County, Prefect Ivan Jakovcic is likely to remain in the
post, according to incomplete returns from polling stations.
For the first time county prefects are elected by direct ballot. A
candidate for a prefect seat has to secure 50 percent of the vote in the first
round. In case no candidate wins a majority, the first two candidates will
compete in a runoff two weeks after the first round of voting.
