PLOCE, June 26 (Hina) - A 13-strong team of Neretva boatmen
(Neretvanski Ladjari) on Friday crossed the English Channel in a gondola
despite big waves, a strong wind and strong sea currents, managing to pass the
36-kilometre route from Dover, Great Britain, to Calais, France, in three hours
and 42 minutes. The Croatian boatmen planned to make this adventure
on Thursday, 25 June, when Croatia celebrates Statehood Day, however, bad
weather prevented them.
The team of 10 rowers, one drummer and two coxswains will be received
by the Croatian Ambassador to France, Mirko Galic, at a ceremony in Paris set
for Saturday.
The 36-kilometre crossing between Dover and Calais was some 10
kilometres longer than the boatmen's traditional race along the Neretva River,
southern Croatia, in August.
