ZAGREB/CAKOVEC, June 26 (Hina) - Stjepan Mesaric, a journalist of the Medjimurske Novine newspaper, was on Thursday evening beaten up by a son of a local businessman who was dissatisfied with Mesaric's articles in that weekly about
road construction works performed by a Zganec-led company in the northern town of Mursko Sredisce.
ZAGREB/CAKOVEC, June 26 (Hina) - Stjepan Mesaric, a journalist of
the Medjimurske Novine newspaper, was on Thursday evening beaten up by a son of
a local businessman who was dissatisfied with Mesaric's articles in that
weekly about road construction works performed by a Zganec-led company in the
northern town of Mursko Sredisce. Josip Zganec, businessman Branko
Zganec's son, hit with his fists Mesaric on his head several times, injuring
his face and teeth, the Cakovec-based weekly reported on Friday.
The police pressed misdemeanour charges against the assailant.
The incident took place near the Mura River as Mesaric was going there
to report about floods affecting the northern Croatian area of Medjimurje.
The incident was condemned in the strongest terms by the Croatian
Journalists' Association (HND), the Journalists' Trade Union (SNH) and the
weekly.
