Activists lift blockade on Varsavska Street construction site

ZAGREB, June 18 (Hina) - Activists of civil society associations on Friday removed make-shift tents which they set up a month ago in Varsavska street as part of their campaign to prevent the HOTO Group from building an underground car park and the entrance to that facility in that downtown Zagreb street.

The activists announced other forms of protest in the coming period, calling on relevant institutions to clarify the matter in legal terms.

The Chief State Prosecutor's Office and a Culture Ministry expert group have established that a permit issued by Zagreb's monument conservation agency enabling this private investor to expand the planned construction site was incorrect and unlawful, activist Tomislav Tomasevic said at a news conference today.

Yesterday, this finding was viewed by activists as the first victory in their three-and-a-half-year campaign.

The permit paved the way for changes of the spatial plan, and activists now insist on their revocation.

HOTO Group, a private company owned by Tomislav Horvatincic, is building a residential and business complex, including the underground car park, in Cvjetni Trg and Varsavska Street. The project has sparked public protests. Green Action and the Right to a City have been organising protests in the square and nearby Varsavska street against the construction of an entrance to the underground garage in that pedestrian zone.
