This umbrella organisation of ethnic Croats represents their interests in education, information, culture and in the official use of the Croatian language. The HNV is financed from the Serbian state budget.
A total of 137 electors, each of whom has collected 100 verified signatures from ethnic Croats, will take part in electing the 29-seat council.
Two political parties are to play a decisive role in the process: the Democratic Alliance of Vojvodina Croats and the Democratic Party (DS) led by Serbian President Boris Tadic through DS members of Croat background.
Other electors come minor Croat political parties and associations being active in Vojvodina.
Under the 2009 law on this matter, ethnic minorities can elect their representatives at direct elections if they manage to compile separate lists of voters of their ethnic background.
The Croatian minority failed to collect the required number of signatures for its separate voter register and therefore it is elector who will decide on the new make-up of the minority's umbrella organisation.
