Eurostat's director-general says it's important to strengthen DZS's independence and expertise

ZAGREB, Jan 24 (Hina) - Eurostat's Director-General Mariana Kotzeva said in Zagreb on Friday after meeting with Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic that the cooperation between the European Union's statistical office and the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS) was excellent and that the DZS should continue strengthening its independence and expertise.

She said that the topics discussed were connected with the Croatian presidency of the Council of the European Union and included preparations for a meeting of the heads of the statistical offices of the EU member states in March and preparations for the population census and the agricultural census in Croatia.

Also discussed was the role of the DZS in Croatia's participation in the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM II) in the euro adoption process. In this context, Kotzeva said that it was important to strengthen the independence and expertise of the DZS.

DZS Director-General Lidija Brkovic said that the agricultural census would be conducted this year and the population census next year.

It will be the first digital population census in Croatia and Ms Kotzeva's experience is important because she conducted the first online population census in Bulgaria, which was very successful, Brkovic said.
