Opposition leader: President should initiate govt. session on situation in Croatia

Autor: half
KRAPINA, Dec 30 (Hina) - Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) president Tomislav Karamarko said in Krapina on Monday that a government theme session on the situation in the country should be convened by President Ivo Josipovic and that he should care more about better living conditions for citizens than his image.

"I will continue to push for convening a government theme session on the situation in Croatia," Karamarko said responding to questions from reporters, who reminded him that Josipovic had said that the prime minister convened government sessions.

Josipovic is an excellent lawyer and knows his powers very well and, in accordance with them, he can urge the prime minister to convene the theme session, said the opposition leader.

Although a presidential election is near and Josipovic is practically already campaigning, his primary task is to fight for ensuring the best possible living conditions for every Croatian citizen and not worry about his image, he added.

"A sort of inventory should be made, given that the budget is 18 billion kuna (EUR 2.39b) in the red, there are 363,000 jobless and there are no investments, only false promises by the incumbent government."

In connection with the case of Josip Perkovic, a Yugoslav-era secret service official wanted in Germany in connection with the 1983 murder of a Croatian dissident, reporters asked Karamarko to comment on a position that former secret service chiefs should not be extradited.

He said that everyone who committed a crime must be held to account, adding that the law on the European Arrest Warrant "was delayed from July 1 until January 1 and I don't know why. That decision by the government caused confusion and made the European Union and Germany mistrust Croatia. I don't understand why such a decision was made and it is up to Milanovic to explain."

Asked what was good and what was bad in 2013, Karamarko said that "generally speaking, the situation is very bad because living standards and GDP are constantly declining." He recalled announcements that the number of the jobless could reach 385,000 by mid-February.

He said he was only satisfied with the homogenisation and growing rating of the HDZ and the party's victory in local and European Parliament elections.

Karamarko was in the northern town of Krapina to sign a national level coalition agreement with the Zagorje Democratic Party (ZDS) to run in the next parliamentary election.

Croatia has not been so in danger since the 1991-95 Homeland War, the incumbent government has brought it to the verge of bankruptcy and the rampant unemployment is the result of the government's fumbling, lack of inventiveness and know-how, he said.

He went on to say that the HDZ-led coalition of six centre-right parties was an authentic, popular coalition with an economic programme that would give an impetus to citizens and business people and offer a balanced tax policy.

"The other important task before the coalition is the preservation of the Croatian people's identity," Karamarko said, adding that the incumbent government had "made several attacks on the identity of Croatians in order to take their origin and future."

He said the coalition comprised "popular parties which reflect the spirit of the Croatian people and whose task is to stop such attacks."

The coalition consists of the HDZ, the ZDS, the Croatian Peasant Party, the Pensioners Together Bloc, the Croatian Party of Rights, and the Croatian Christian Democratic Party.
