"Looking at the present Constitution, some provisions are, in a way, lagging behind the times. As an authorised sponsor, I intend to invite a group of people to work on a constitutional project which, if I win the next election, I will propose to parliament, perhaps in a year's time, as a new constitutional project," the president said on Nova TV's primetime news.
Josipovic said he planned to open a public discussion on constitutional changes. "It's a comprehensive project, so we'll see."
Asked about the case of Josip Perkovic, a Yugoslav-era secret agent wanted in Germany for the 1983 murder of a Croatian dissident, and the fact that the European Arrest Warrant goes into force on January 1, Josipovic said he expected the law to be enforced.
"The courts are in charge of enforcing the law and what they decide, will be," he said, adding: "I don't think anyone will have the right to further let passions run high over the story because the court can and must only apply the law."
He said he expected the court's decision in the case to put an end to the story, adding that he expected no diplomatic pressure. "Just as we honour other courts' decisions, so must other countries honour our decisions."
Speaking about his candidacy for another presidential term, Josipovic said he saw himself as a candidate of the left and the centre-left, and that in the whole political spectrum there were respectable people who could run against him. "I'd like there to be many good candidates."
Asked how he viewed Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic of the opposition HDZ in that context, Josipovic said he did not see her as a "nightmare" but as a "capable lady who would be a good candidate."
He did not agree with critics' description of him as "Mr. Maybe." "If you look at it, all my key political decisions were very clear," said the president.
