Finance minister meets with bankers over credit consumer act

Autor: half
ZAGREB, Nov 7 (Hina) - Finance Minister Slavko Linic on Thursday presented amendments to the Credit Consumer Act in parliament, saying he met with bankers last night because they insisted on a consideration of their proposal that there be a uniform solution to the costs of loans pegged to the Swiss franc.

Linic said bankers also said they were willing to drop lawsuits over non-performing loans and not contest the constitutionality of the amendments.

He said that this morning bankers proposed "formulating the average prices of loans pegged to the Swiss franc ranging from four to 4.2 per cent and that the government reduce the average interest rate by 30 per cent, which would reduce the costs of those loans from the current 5.3% to 2.7-2.9%." He added that the government would consider this proposal at its next session.

Linic said the solution was acceptable and that the reduced interest rate would be applied as of January 1.

Presenting the amendments, he said they were aimed at satisfying citizens, civil initiatives, the banking sector and the central bank.

He added that on October 31 citizens' debt because of unpaid loans totalled HRK 22.6 billion and that banks must understand that the increase in unpaid claims was also their problem.
